Interesting Information About Newham

In 1965, the London Borough of Newham was established through the London Government Act 1963, taking over the area previously governed by the Essex county boroughs of West Ham and East Ham, both abolished by the same legislation. The name Newham is a combination of the compass points of the old boroughs, reflecting its creation. As part of Inner London in East London, Newham is home to 387,576 residents, the third highest population among London boroughs and the 16th most populous district in England. Newham London Borough Council is the local governing body.

Located 5 miles (8 km) east of the City of London, Newham is situated north of the River Thames, with the Woolwich Ferry and foot tunnel as the only means of crossing to the south, and is bordered by the River Lea to the west and the North Circular Road to the east. Newham was selected as one of the six host boroughs for the 2012 Summer Olympics and houses the majority of the Olympic Park, including the London Stadium. Additionally, the borough encompasses other major landmarks such as the Excel Exhibition Centre and London City Airport.

Some of the primary areas within the region are East Ham, West Ham, Stratford, Plaistow, Forest Gate, Beckton, and Canning Town.

London is a melting pot of cultures, and the London Borough of Newham is one of the most diverse and vibrant areas of London. Located in East London, bordering the River Thames, the borough is home to over 350,000 people, making it the tenth most populous borough in London.

Newham is rich in history, and its story can be traced back to the Anglo-Saxon era. The area was named after the Old English word ‘ham,’ which means ‘homestead.’ In the 19th century, the area was known for its bustling docks, which brought wealth to the area. However, the borough was heavily bombed during World War II, and the post-war years were difficult.

Despite the challenges faced by the borough, it has made significant progress in recent years. It hosted the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which brought significant investment to the area. The Olympic Park, which is now known as Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, is a world-class sporting venue that is open to the public. The park boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including the London Stadium, the Aquatics Centre, and the Velodrome.

The borough is also home to some of London's most iconic landmarks, including the Royal Docks and the ExCeL Exhibition Centre. The ExCeL Centre is a popular venue for conferences, trade shows, and entertainment events. It has hosted events like the London Boat Show, the Country Living Christmas Fair, and the Star Wars Celebration.

But it’s not just about the attractions; Newham is a great place to live. It has excellent transport links, with several tube and DLR stations serving the area, making it easy to explore other parts of London. The borough has a thriving arts and culture scene, with venues like the Stratford Circus Arts Centre and the Theatre Royal Stratford East offering a range of performances. The area also has a range of parks and green spaces, such as West Ham Park, Beckton District Park, and Plashet Park.

The borough is also home to a diverse range of communities, including large South Asian, African, and Caribbean populations. This diversity is reflected in the food on offer, with a range of restaurants and markets offering cuisine from around the world.

In recent years, the area has faced its share of challenges. There are still areas of deprivation, and the borough is one of the poorest in London. However, there are many community groups and organisations working to make a positive impact.

This is a borough that may have once been overlooked, but it’s now a place where people are proud to call home. With its rich history, world-class attractions, and diverse communities, this really is a borough that is going places.
