Interesting Information About Crawley

Located in West Sussex, England, Crawley is a borough and a sizeable town that spans over 17.36 square miles (44.96 km2). Approximately 28 miles (45 km) south of London, 18 miles (29 km) north of Brighton and Hove, and 32 miles (51 km) north-east of Chichester, it had a population of 106,597 during the 2011 Census.

The area has a rich history, with evidence of human activity dating back to the Stone Age. During Roman times, the town was a hub for ironworking and slowly developed into a market town in the 13th century. Its strategic location on the main road from London to Brighton brought trade and encouraged the establishment of coaching inns. The introduction of a rail link to London in 1841 further stimulated the town's growth.

In the 1940s, Gatwick Airport, currently one of the busiest airports in the UK, opened on the outskirts of Crawley. This led to significant commercial and industrial development in the area. After World War II, the British Government initiated a program aimed at relocating a large number of people and jobs from London to new towns like Crawley.

The old market town's core is surrounded by 14 residential neighbourhoods, separated by main roads and railway lines. Ifield, Pound Hill, and Three Bridges communities were eventually incorporated into the town's expansion. In 2009, Crawley's economic development involved a partnership with Horsham District Council to create Kilnwood Vale, a new neighbourhood in the west and north-west. While the large industrial area provides employment opportunities for service and manufacturing companies related to the airport, the town's commercial and retail sectors continue to grow as the main hub of industry and employment between London and the south coast.

Crawley also has a rich industrial heritage, which is celebrated at the town’s Museum and Art Gallery. The museum tells the story of Crawley’s development from a small market town to a bustling centre of commerce, and features exhibits on the town’s aviation and engineering industries, as well as its agricultural history.

But there’s more to the area than just its history. The town is home to a diverse cultural scene, with a range of exciting events and festivals throughout the year.
